The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) reminds telephone users in the 513 and 283 area codes that the “permissive dialing period” ends June 29. Permissive dialing allows users in the area to dial calls using only the seven-digit phone number. After June 29, all calls in the 513 area code, plus those in the new, overlayed 283 area code will be forced to dial 10 digits to complete calls. Any calls made with seven digits will no longer be completed.
Security dealers in Columbus will need to reprogram their monitoring customers’ digital dialers to reflect 10-digit phone numbers. PUCO is encouraging its customers to begin reprogramming all digital and speed dialers during the six-month permissive dialing period. In the past four years, eight new area codes have been added in Ohio. They include 234, 283, 330, 380, 440, 567, 740 and 937, and were created because the state exhausted its existing area codes.
