OmniTek, an ADEMCO Group Company and part of Honeywell’s Home and Building Control Business, has entered into a license agreement with Inside Technologies, a semiconductor company and developer of contactless smart card chips. The technology transfer license will enable OmniTek to develop a new family of OmniProx(r) 13.56MHz smart card readers to be manufactured and sold worldwide based on Inside’s PicoTag(r) ISO 15693 secure contactless technology.

The OmniProx readers will be priced competitively to 125KHz proximity readers and offer the same operating distance, while supporting smart card technology. OmniTek will order more than 1 million PicoTag secure smart cards during the next year to support its market expansion.

“Clearly, there is now a real move by access control companies to shift from 125KHz to 13.56MHz, which is already a standard frequency in the smart card marketplace. Companies adopting this frequency will have the potential to link access control to the smart card world and create added value applications,” explains Steve Lewis, Inside Technology’s smart card marketing manager.

The OmniProx smart card reader family is expected to be available in the third quarter of 2001. OmniTek is a manufacturer of products for the access control marketplace.
