Open Garage Doors Entice Texas Thieves

Southlake, Texas

Police in a Texas town near Dallas are warning residents to keep the garage doors closed after a spike in crimes involving garage doors left open at night.

Through August, nine burglaries involving open garage doors were reported in the city of Southlake compared to three at the same point last year, officials said. Most of the thefts occur at night. Car interiors provide a rich source of items for burglars, police say. Laptop computers, other electronic equipment and purses are also among items that have been reported stolen.

“It’s not an epidemic, but it’s certainly more than we had last year,” says Southlake Police Chief Marlin Price. “This is occurring all over the country.”
