OXNARD, Calif.—The Oxnard Police Department’s False Alarm Awareness School is gaining interest in the community. In fact, the school recently had a record 51 people attend the class in an attempt to dismiss a $75 fine. The school has caught the attention of neighboring municipalities, such as Ventura and Simi Valley. According to an article in the Los Angeles Times, police agencies throughout Ventura County respond to thousands of false alarms each month, costing law enforcement between $70 and $100 for each false alarm. Oxnard Cmdr. Tom Chronister, who runs the false alarm education program, contends 18 percent of calls for service in Oxnard are security alarm-related. Of those calls, nearly 98 percent are false alarms.
