In an effort to curtail an estimated 13,000 false alarms each year, city officials here adopted a new ordinance to penalize residents and businesses for repeated false dispatches.
The city will begin imposing $100 fines each time police respond to an alarm that isn’t a valid emergency, according to the Miami Herald. Until now, Pembroke Pines police have never charged homeowners or businesses for false alarms.
The new ordinance requires Pembroke Pines residents and business owners to register their alarm systems at no cost and also renew the registration each year.
The ordinance mandates the first two false alarms will draw no fines, while the third and subsequent false alarms in a 12-month period will trigger the $100 fines. If police respond to an unregistered alarm, the owner will have 30 days to register it or face a $50 fine.
