THOUSAND PALM, Calif. – Police here are warning residents that thieves in the area are targeting homes that display home security signs.

Police have received several reports in the past month that men are posing as alarm company technicians in an effort to get into homes.

Victims reported to police that a man dressed in an ADT uniform showed up to their doorsteps, telling them that he needed to update their alarm systems.

When the victims let him in, the so-called technician looked around for several minutes and then left. During his time in the homes, he never touched any alarm systems, KESQ.com reports.

Officers say that imposter alarm technicians could be scanning homes to steal identification for identity theft purposes or to steal property for a burglary.

Police have encouraged residents to contact their alarm companies to confirm that a technician is supposed to be on the premises.
