Frost & Sullivan recently partnered with monitoring service provider Protection One to study the physical security needs of the shipping and trucking industry.
The study focused on ways the industry can look to technology and physical security solutions to help prevent or reduce damage from fire, natural disasters, theft, vandalism, harassment and workplace violence.
Frost & Sullivan Industry Analyst Dilip Sarangan says the shipping and trucking industry faces a significant number of security threats due to exposed locations and dynamic operations. Many of the facilities consist of warehouses, maintenance areas, docks, garages, offices and parking lots, which creates a challenge for security providers. However, Sarangan says the use of physical security solutions has proved to help trucking and shipping companies reduce losses and improve profitability.
“Logistics providers, who work with high-value, sensitive or hazardous materials, face the ever-present threat of loss and damage from both inside and outside elements. In addition, businesses that depend on the logistics industry to move goods from point of origin to point of sale often require a certain level of security,” says John Todd, national account manager for Protection One.
According to Todd, logistics providers also face federal mandates related to safety and security depending on what materials are being shipped,
“The very nature of the trucking and shipping industry requires comprehensive, flexible security solutions, and today’s technology makes the options for protecting assets more convenient and affordable than ever,” Todd says.
