PSIA Releases Specification for Access Control, Intrusion Solutions

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The Physical Security Interoperability Alliance (PSIA) has released a new specification to make access control and intrusion detection solutions interoperable with an overall security system.

The Area Control v1.0 is the group’s fourth system-oriented specification. To develop the standard, PSIA partnered with several access control and intrusion solution providers, including ASSA ABLOY, Honeywell, Inovonics, Lenel, Mercury Security, NICE, Stanley Security (Sonitrol), UTC and VidSys.

“Considering that more than two-thirds of the access control and intrusion systems market were involved, we would expect this to be the de facto industry standard,” PSIA Executive Director David Bunzel says.

Earlier this year, Honeywell, Tyco and UTC announced products relying on the new standard will ship in 2012. Inovonics and Lenel will also follow suit with their products next year.

The spec also utilizes other PSIA specs, including the Common Metadata and Events Model (CMEM). CMEM provides a comprehensive way to process the data received from various physical security devices.

“We support this spec because standardizing interaction between independent systems will benefit our entire industry,” Mercury Security CEO Frank Gasztonyi says. “PSIA’s work to develop open standards is consistent with our corporate philosophy and complements our future product plans.”
