The father of a 6-year-old girl has much to be thankful for, especially the city of Baltimore for having installed cameras in public places throughout the community. According to Annie Linskey, a reporter for the Baltimore Sun, the girl’s father left the girl outside their Cordelia Avenue home for just a few minutes while he re-entered the home to retrieve something he’d forgotten inside. When he returned a few minutes later he found that his daughter was nowhere to be found.
After an hour of searching the neighborhood, the father contacted the Baltimore Police Department. Theo D. Fleet, the officer who responded, immediately called for backup. He dispatched additional police officers with dogs as well as a helicopter. It was then that he remembered the public cameras the city installed.
“There it was,” said Fleet. “We saw, walking up the 3300 block of West Belvedere, the suspect. She was walking eastbound with the little girl.”
After some checking with other residents, the girl was found in a nearby home. The abductor was a 47-year-old female with a history of drug abuse.
“We learned the suspect had a mental illness. She had children before who were taken from her,” Fleet said.
