A Canadian Senate committee reported that security measures across the country’s 89 major airports have lagged to dangerous levels. The Senate’s report made 16 recommendations for safety and security improvements to problems such as rampant organized crime, insufficient policing, inadequate employee background checks and improperly screened cargo.
Among the Senate’s recommendations are the addition of 800 Canadian Mounted Police to oversee airport security, increasing the current 2 percent of 110,000 airport employees subjected to random searches to 10 percent, and improved screening of mail, cargo and checked baggage on flights.
According to the report, since the terrorist attacks of 9/11 on the United States, Canada has spent billions of dollars to boost airport security, but it has only led to minimal improvements.
