Rio Rancho Alarm Permits Required

Anyone with an alarm system in Rio Rancho, N.M., will be required to get a permit for their alarms.

The alarm ordinance adopted by the Rio Rancho City Council in May to cut down on the number of false alarms went into effect July 1. The ordinance requires the owner of any building—including homes, businesses and public buildings—to get a permit for the alarm systems, said John Francis, spokesman for the city’s department of public safety.

Between June 12, 2002, and June 12, the department responded to 4,048 alarm calls; 98 percent of them were false, Francis said, according to the Albuquerque Journal.

People who currently have alarm systems have until Dec. 27 to apply for a permit under the ordinance. People installing alarms after July 1 will have 30 days to apply for the permit. A permit will cost $10 per year.

Alarm owners are allowed three false alarms in a 12-month period. A $25 fine will be issued on the fourth false alarm, and a $40 fine after six false alarms, Francis told the publication.
