RIO DE JANEIRO — The Olympics are a month away but there’s huge security concerns for those going to Rio de Janeiro for the games.
Mayor Eduardo Paes told CNN that the state is doing a “terrible” job in securing the city for the Olympics. “It’s completely failing at its work of policing and taking care of people,” he said.
On the flip side, Brazil officials are saying the opposite: The Olympics will be safe and could even start tomorrow, according to Carlos Arthur Nuzman, president of the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee.
“There will be a maximum success in this beautiful city of ours,” Nuzman said.
There have been a number of instances already around the games, raising security concerns. And the police officers are protesting that they haven’t been paid in months. At the main airport in Rio, officers were protesting with a sign saying, “Welcome to Hell. Police and firefighters don’t get paid, whoever comes to Rio de Janeiro will not be safe.”
