The proliferation of public CCTV systems continues, with video systems manufacturer Pelco donating the equipment for a system in San Diego. The city has installed surveillance cameras along a high-crime block in the downtown area, reported the San Diego Union-Tribune.
The cameras were placed in an area near a local Metropolitan Transit System trolley station to capture images of activity in and around the trolleys 24 hours a day. The addition of these cameras brings the number of trolley stations with video surveillance up to eight.
Pelco donated the cameras and recording equipment, and installers Dynaelectric and Electro Video volunteered to do the installations.
The city hopes that the cameras will help authorities investigate cases in a more effective manner and also deter crime.
