SAVANNAH, Ga. — Savannah Mayor Eddie DeLoach wants to add video surveillance cameras to increase safety. The problem? Finding the money in the state budget to fund the program.
Mayor DeLoach met with state leaders roughly a month ago to discuss receiving state funds for the cameras, as well as an internship program. The city has not received any money so far.
WJCL in Savannah reports the program — which could also incorporate other technologies — would cost $1.3 million to $1.5 million.
“If one less person dies this year then it’s worth it,” DeLoach said. “I mean, how do you price a life?”

DeLoach has an ally in Alderman-At-Large Brian Foster. He wants more than 100 surveillance cameras installed and says some of the current cameras in the city don’t work.
“I think when you add this to what we already have and all the private cameras out there with the businesses,” Foster said, “I think we can get some pretty good coverage.”
DeLoach is also considering the use of drones to monitor large crowds of people.
