NEW ORLEANS, La. – More police officers around the country are wearing body cameras than ever before. This increase in usage also brings an increase in video footage to review.

This past summer, the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s office in New Orleans signed a two-year contract with Vu Digital.

Vu Digital is a Jackson, Miss.-based video metadata company that developed a video review tool that relies on technology called S.M.A.R.T. (Storage Metadata Automated Redaction Review Technology).

The tool works by taking small dialogues that are spoken in a video, reducing it to text and giving them a time-stamp.

Users can then search through the footage with key terms and be brought to that exact point of the video.

The company claims it reduces evidence review time by up to 80%.

“When you extrapolate those time-savings over thousands of hours of video, you can already see the value in what we provide to either district attorneys or police departments,” Gregory Sandifer, project specialist at Vu Digital tells Government Product News.

Vu Digital says the system is currently cloud based and it is working towards an on-premise model.
