SECURE Perspectives is a column by the Security Industry Association (SIA), profiling women in the security industry. This column is part of SIA’s Women in Security Forum (WISF), a community created to support the participation and advancement of women in the security industry, which fosters growth and advancement through programs, professional development and networking opportunities.

For this edition of SECURE Perspectives, SIA spoke with Jessica Waddle, who is marketing specialist at Gallagher Security and a WISF AmbassadHER.

SIA: How did you get into the security industry?

Jessica Waddle: Five years ago, I had the privilege of applying for a marketing internship with Gallagher Security. Since then, my journey in the security industry has been nothing short of transformative.

Many in the field often remark that once you enter the security sector, it becomes challenging to leave. I believe this sentiment stems from the close-knit community within the industry, where enduring relationships are forged and nurtured over time.

SIA: How does your organization serve the industry?

Waddle: Gallagher Security’s remarkable journey began in 1938 with a horse named Joe, who developed an amusing penchant for using a car as a scratching post. In response, Bill Gallagher Sr. ingeniously devised an electrical circuit that delivered a harmless yet surprising shock whenever Joe rocked the vehicle.

This innovative solution marked the inception of the electric fence, laying the foundation for our legacy.

Today, Gallagher Security proudly designs and manufactures a comprehensive suite of security software and hardware at our global headquarters, including integrated access control, intruder alarms and perimeter solutions, all tailored to meet diverse security needs.

SIA: What is your current position?

Waddle: I am the marketing specialist at Gallagher Security, helping with anything and everything marketing — from events to campaigns and more!

SIA: What types of job functions do women fill in your company? Is there diversity of roles in your company, or do women gravitate toward certain job functions?

Waddle: Our company is proud to have a diverse and talented group of women who fill a wide range of roles across the globe. From training administrator to chief product officer, these exceptional individuals contribute significantly to our success and help drive our mission forward. Their dedication and expertise play a vital role in keeping our organization thriving.

SIA: With more and more data that shows diversity makes a better workforce, what opportunities do you see for women in the security industry as an WISF AmbassadHER?

Waddle: Women in the security industry have a tremendous opportunity to venture into the technical realm. Currently, many women predominantly occupy roles in sales and marketing; however, there is significant potential for rapid growth in the technical aspects of our field.

At Gallagher Security, we are proud to have Meredith Palmer serving as our chief product officer — an inspiring example that is not commonly seen in global companies.

SIA: What impediments do you see for achieving this? What could remedy some of these impediments?

Waddle: I firmly believe that women are often held back by external narratives that suggest they cannot succeed in certain roles. In today’s world, we have the power to achieve anything we set our minds to.

One effective way to empower women to confidently pursue technical positions is through mentorship from other women. By providing guidance and support, these mentors can illuminate the pathways available, reinforcing the idea that success is attainable if we actively seek it.

SIA: What do you see as important trends in the industry?

Waddle: A shift is occurring as the younger generation enters the security industry. Unlike previous generations, they are accustomed to sharing a wealth of information online. While some may perceive this as a disregard for privacy, the reality is that they are advocating for transparency and the autonomy to choose what information is shared.

This generational perspective is reshaping the landscape of security, emphasizing the importance of informed consent and openness in a rapidly evolving digital world.

SIA: More specifically, what trends are you seeing in Gallagher’s space as a designer and manufacturer of security software and hardware?

Waddle: Gallagher Security is a forward-thinking and innovative company, and we are excited to announce the launch of our new Controller 7000 line, where cyber defense begins at the door. As we navigate a new era of cybersecurity, the need for futureproofed innovation and robust security has never been more critical.

The evolving landscape of threats requires a proactive security solution that not only addresses today’s challenges but is also prepared to tackle the complexities of tomorrow’s digital environment.

SIA: What are the top challenges your company has faced in the last year?

Waddle: The biggest challenge our team at Gallagher faced last year was managing our growing pains. As we approach a record number of team members, our methods of operation have evolved, prompting us to seek innovative ways to work smarter, not harder.

We are actively exploring strategies to enhance our efficiency and collaboration, ensuring that we continue to thrive as our organization expands.

SIA: What are the biggest opportunities your company — and the industry — are seeing?

Waddle: The greatest opportunity for every company in the industry lies in the potential for creativity — if only they dare to try!

Many of my colleagues have gone above and beyond to expand the possibilities within our field, thinking outside the box to deliver innovative solutions that some may not have even considered feasible. This spirit of creativity is driving the industry forward and unlocking new avenues for success.

SIA: What do you hope the SIA Women in Security Forum (WISF) can achieve for the security industry?

Waddle: I envision a future where, as we enter meetings or walk onto the trade show floor, we witness a more equitable representation, approaching a one-to-one ratio of men to women.

This balance will extend beyond sales and marketing roles, with women taking the lead as speakers, guiding discussions on how we can collaboratively enhance safety and security in our world. Together, we can make this vision a reality!

SIA: What is your best advice for women in the industry as a WISF AmbassadHER?

Waddle: My foremost advice to women in the security industry is to embrace the power of listening. Regardless of your position or experience level, there is almost certainly someone in the room who can impart valuable insights. By remaining open and receptive, you can continuously learn and grow in this dynamic field.

SIA: Who or what was the strongest influence in your career?

Waddle: God has guided me all my life to help people. Given the many precious lives affected by preventable circumstances, I am driven to enhance safety and well-being. Utilizing my marketing skills to promote solutions that consistently save lives is the primary reason I remain passionate about the security industry today.

SIA: How do you define success?

Waddle: I define success in my role by my personal growth and development. Each day brings new learning opportunities that I can apply across all areas of my life — from my professional endeavors to my home life. This continuous growth is what truly signifies success for me.

SIA: What would you say to new upcoming women in the industry as a WISF AmbassadHER?

Waddle: To women who are new to the security industry, I encourage you to advocate for yourselves. Remember the words, “Be strong and courageous,” as the Lord reminds us.

It’s essential to find a balance between being helpful and ensuring that you’re not taken advantage of. You are one individual, and your mental and physical health should always come first. Prioritize your well-being as you navigate this exciting journey!
