Security Sales & Integration’s 2018 Wage & Salary Study surveyed 217 security contractors (security integrators and dealers) about a variety of wage- and salary-related questions.
Among the responses recorded were how sales staff are compensated. According to the study, the majority of salespeople (72%) received salary plus commission. Commission-only came in at a distant second place with 16% followed by only salary with 12%.
The most common sales commission rate is at least 10%, with almost a third of companies going with that. Nearly one in four offer 5% or less. The average sales commission for a new customer installation is 6.8%.
More than a third of respondents expect their company’s raises to be in the 3%-5% range, slightly above the overall average of 2.6%. Almost one in five project to remain status quo.
The study also found:
- 5.6% is the average sales commission paid for a monitoring contract renewal.
- 44% of security companies hired additional sales staff in the past 12 months.
- 60% of security contactors pay their sales staff a commission for a monitoring contract renewal.
