Top 10 Security Stories From October 2019: Alarm Panel Scare, China Blacklist & More

While the Summer of 2019 ended up somewhat lacking in major news, this Fall has turned out to be quite a doozy.

September ended with Interlogix announcing it would shut down by the end of 2019, stunning the security industry. October began with another shocking announcement: the revelation that most  hardwired alarm panels from the past 20 years have been manufactured in deviation to UL 1023, UL 985 and NFPA 72 standards, according to security forensic expert Jeffrey Zwirn.

Zwirn detailed his findings in a 43-page forensic analysis as well as demonstrative videos. He told SSI the nonconformity ought to result in “the largest recall the industry has ever seen.”

UL has since responded to the report saying it sees no imminent hazard.

Hikvision and Dahua rose to prominence by offering quality security products at an unbeatable price. However, they have both faced controversy due to their connections to the Chinese government.

Most recently, the United States added 28 Chinese organizations to a blacklist over concerns about their role in human rights violations, including the aforementioned security manufacturers.

Alarm.com and ADT made notable acquisitions that enhance capabilities for each company — VSaaS for Alarm.com and video verification for ADT.
