Top 10 Security Stories From January 2020: ADT Goes DIY, Data Breaches & More

The security industry’s 2020 started with a bang in terms of M&A. Less than a week into the new year, ADT revealed it had acquired  Defenders, its largest independent dealer. Recognized by ADT as its only “Authorized Premier Provider,” the company has serviced more than 2.2 million households since its founding.

Back in October, Anixter announced its plans to be acquired by a Clayton, Dubilier & Rice affiliate for $3.8 billion. In mid-December, it was reported that Anixter received a competing bid from Wesco Int’l.

Since then, bids were raised by both companies before Anixter finally agreed to Wesco’s offer of a $4.5 billion buyout several weeks ago.

Smart home cameras vulnerable to hacking have also received a lot attention this month. In early December, it was revealed that hackers had created software specifically for breaking into Ring video cameras after a rise of complaints from users that said a stranger was speaking to them through their devices.

As a result of these incidents, a class action lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court of the Central District of California. The lawsuit targets Amazon and Ring’s alleged negligence with regard to security practices.

Super affordable smart home camera maker Wyze also suffered a data breach that saw the information of 2.4 million customers leaked due to employee error.
