Security a Priority at Petco Park Ahead of MLB All-Star Game

Police and fire officials have been coordinating security leading up to the Midsummer Classic on July 12.

SAN DIEGO – Administrators at Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres, are busy preparing the venue to host its first Major League Baseball All-Star Game on July 12. A major part of that effort is beefing up security around the event.

Both local and national law enforcement have been working toward keeping the Midsummer Classic safe since the city was awarded the game more than a year ago, NBC 7 San Diego reported.

“We checked in with the FBI and all of our intelligence agencies,” San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman told the television station. “There are no known, specific, credible threats to not just San Diego but to the entire region. Let me repeat there are no known credible threats.”

FLASHBACK:  Padres Succeed in Mission to Convert Analog

Beginning Sunday, an increased patrol presence will be deployed for the MLB All-Star Futures Game and the Legends and Celebrity Softball Game. What fans won’t notice are the undercover patrol officers who will be out in force as well.

“You will see officers in uniform, on bicycles, in vehicles, you’ll see our helicopter,” said Zimmerman. “But we’re also going to have a significant presence of undercover officers working with us, again working with state, local, federal, including the FBI, Department of Homeland Security and others. It is a significant high-visibility presence and also quite a bit out there that you won’t see.”
