SHIRLEY, N.Y. — When does protecting one’s property go too far? Perhaps when a security camera is pointing directly at your neighbor’s daughter’s swing-set.
That is the case on Long Island as two families are in a bit of a stand-off with their security cameras. The Rizzitello family doesn’t like that their neighbor’s camera is pointing directly into their backyard where their 10-year-old daughter and other children play.
“It’s my daughter, my son, my nieces that come to play. It’s very disturbing,” says Adeline Rizzitello.
Meanwhile, the neighbors told CBS2 in New York that the camera is there for security, adding that they have a “problem” with the Rizzitellos and want to protect their property. The neighbors also noted that the Rizzitellos have a camera on their own yard as well, although the Rizzitellos claim the camera was fake and pointing toward their own mailbox.

While both parties are not breaking the law, State Assemblyman Edward Braunstein is proposing a bill that would allow people to sue someone for videotaping their property.
“It’s outrageous that someone would film someone in their backyard, especially young children and we need to provide an avenue for people to take recourse in the courts,” Braunstein says.
