CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Video surveillance cameras have been installed at three city parks here.
The Chesapeake Parks & Recreation Department said the security cameras were implemented as a “deterrence and investigative tool used in apprehension procedures.”
The surveillance cameras were installed at Deep Creek, Elizabeth River and Lakeside Parks, as detailed in a report by WTKR.

The security cameras at Deep Creek and Lakeside Parks are motion-triggered and solar-powered. High-resolution images are taken when motion is detected and audible alarms will warn the intruders.
The cameras at Elizabeth River are a video surveillance system that provides a 360° view of the park.
In one such case, the Elizabeth Park surveillance system has saved Chesapeake approximately $5,000. According to WTKR, a tractor-trailer knocked over a light pole in the park. The park was able to use the security camera footage to get insurance to pay for the damage as opposed to the city paying for it.
