Security Cameras On Tap for Upscale Village Near Manhattan

Thirty security cameras equipped with license plate recognition software are being installed in Bronxville, N.Y.

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – Police in this well-heeled village located about 15 miles north of midtown Manhattan are installing 30 security cameras at a cost of $300,000.

The cameras are being mounted at all entry and exit points, as well as areas with high foot traffic at businesses such as Starbucks, Bow Tie Cinemas and the Haagen-Dazs ice cream shop, Police Chief Christopher Satriale told the Journal News.

“Anywhere you can enter the village, we will have cameras set up to record license plates,” Satriale said.

Eight of the cameras are already in place, according to the newspaper.

Bronxville borders three higher-crime communities, with Yonkers to the west, Mount Vernon to the south, and New Rochelle to the east. The effort was approved as part of the village’s 2016-17 capital plan.

Satriale said his department has used public and private cameras to solve crimes in the past. In May, police used a private camera to arrest a burglary suspect. There have been four bank robberies in the last five years in the village, he told the newspaper, and 17 felony crimes with 12 felony arrests since January.

“They’re invaluable for criminal investigations,” Satriale said. “Anytime you see something that happens, somebody has video. It’s become so affordable and technology has advanced so far to a point where we can zoom in on a license plate on a car driving by and get it.”

Satriale said 10 more cameras will be installed by mid-August and the remaining 12 by the end of the year.

“We sit down each time these crimes happen and say ‘if we only had a camera,’” Satriale said. “There doesn’t need to be an increase (in crime) and you don’t need to be a big city; everyone should be focused and concentrated on solving crime.”
