Sensormatic Electronics Corp. announces it has partnered with Movie Gallery, the third-largest video rental chain in the United States, to test the first phase of its smartEAS radio frequency identification (RFID) system focused on in-store inventory management. Movie Gallery, headquartered in Dothan, Ala., operates nearly 1,000 stores, primarily throughout the southeastern U.S. The chain will initially use the in-store inventory management system in two locations for automated inventory returns, RFID tag programming, inventory counting, and reading and writing data at the point of sale (POS). An RFID tag can store more information about the product than a traditional barcode, can be scanned from greater distances and doesn’t require the user to locate the actual tag to read the information.

“Sensormatic is developing the flexible products needed to provide RFID and security solutions throughout the retail supply chain,” says Steve Cannellos, senior vice president and general manager of SensorID and Access Control Divisions for Sensormatic. “We have the technology team in place and we are ready to take the next step of partnering with innovative companies, such as Movie Gallery, that want to gain a competitive advantage through RFID using our unique smartEAS technology.”
