Clark County Sheriff Bill Young wants the local casinos to
be the eyes of law enforcement authorities along the strip
in Las Vegas. David Kihara of the Review-Journal of
Las Vegas says that Sheriff Young believes that everyone
involved will benefit.
Sheriff Young wants the casino community to install and
manage additional outdoor cameras on the Strip near Russell
Road to Sahara Ave. Whenever and where there’s trouble,
these cameras would be there to record the action.
“For a very reasonable investment, I think we can
provide a much more secure net to encompass the entire
tourist corridor,” says Young. “The idea would be to expand
on what they have now. None of the cameras would be on
public property; they would all be on private property.”
According to the Review-Journal, if the casinos buy into Young’s vision, it will provide enhanced video surveillance of the entire tourist corridor.
David Strow with Harrah’s Entertainment publicly supports Young’s idea, as does MGM Mirage.
Not everyone agrees that more video surveillance is a good thing, however. According to the Review-Journal, Gary Peck, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Nevada says that more video is not the right move to make.
“We understand and certainly appreciate that, in a post-9/11 world, there is a desire for enhanced security. But we at the ACLU don’t think turning Southern Nevada into a total surveillance society is the best or most appropriate way to achieve that goal,” says Peck.
