SIA Reaches Deal on Energy Efficiency Standards

The Security Industry Association (SIA) has stepped in to help broker a deal between the electronic security industry and environmental groups concerned over the energy efficiency of security devices.

The Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007 requires electronic devices to meet efficiency standards designated for “active,” “off” and “standby” modes. While these requirements apply to electronic security and life safety devices, SIA is lobbying to amend the act since the equipment is always in “active” mode.

SIA has presented key members of Congress with legislative language that would exempt security and life safety devices from the “off” and “standby” requirements. The proposed amendment has the support of both industry and environmental organizations, according to the association.

“We respectfully urge Congress to adopt this common-sense proposal backed by some of the most widely respected environmental groups in the country and many SIA member companies,” says SIA Director of Research Mark Visbal. “After thoughtful and productive negotiations led by SIA, this technical amendment strikes the right balance for all interested parties.”

The proposed amendment has been sent to the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee and could be added to energy/climate change legislation that is being considered by the Senate.

The proposal is supported by Alliance to Save Energy, the American Council for An Energy-Efficient Economy, the Appliance Standards Awareness Project, the Electronic Security Association (ESA) and the Natural Resources Defense Council.
