The Security Industry Association (SIA) has officially come out against the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) plans to have its Codes and Standards Administration Department develop codes for premises security, which NFPA announced Jan. 28. In a letter sent to NFPA, SIA notes a poll of its members reveals the following objections: 1) NFPA does not have the appropriate expertise in the subject matter; 2) an additional standards developer in this area where there are already several existing standards developers would not serve the security industry well.

The letter continues, “While we oppose your new project, we would like to offer a means of coordination for any related issues that might arise from time to time in our respective areas of standardization. We invite you to become an observing member of the Security Industry Association Standards Committee (SISC), a coalition committee of standards developing organizations (SDOs) in the security industry, which coordinates the work of the individual SDOs based on their areas of subject matter expertise.”
