Security Identification Systems Corp. (SISCO) has been contracted by Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean Intl. to install state-of-the-art security systems in all of their ships. The new A-PASS (automated personnel assisted security screening) system will control all access and exits from the ships through an interactive high-speed photo identification process. Guests activate the system prior to boarding the ship for the first time by inserting their boarding card at a pier-side kiosk, which triggers a built-in camera to take their photograph and store in the ship’s database. The database also holds a record of all valid crewmembers onboard. Subsequently, each time guests exit or board the ship, they insert their card into the kiosk and computer terminals monitored by ship security track their exit and entry.

“This technology has proven itself throughout the cruise industry and will augment our already stringent security measures,” says Jack Williams, president of Royal Caribbean Intl. “This August, Grandeur of the Seas will be the line’s first ship to feature the technology.” SISCO’s systems have received praise from the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Customs and the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service.
