Transit agencies are increasingly using video surveillance cameras to fight crime and terrorism, according to a new report released by the University of South Florida.
As the volume of video data increases, the existing digital video surveillance systems provide the infrastructure only to capture, store and distribute video, while leaving the task of threat detection exclusively to human operators.
The research project, which was sponsored by the Florida Department of Transportation and U.S. Department of Transportation, provided an in-depth analysis of the strengths, weaknesses, and future directions of research and commercial video analytics products.
A technology survey was also conducted among the largest agencies in Florida. The results showed a very low use of video analytics, significant skepticism, and poor general knowledge of the technology and its capabilities.
