Smarter Security Systems, an intelligent entrance control and outdoor security solutions provider, has secured the perimeter of eight substations in Denton, Texas, with its SmartFence solution. The substations are managed by the city’s 104-year-old electrical utility.
SmartFence was initially installed at only one substation in Denton; however, with the rise of copper theft and vandalism, the city decided to expand its protection.
“While we had cameras, that wasn’t enough. We needed something to alert us at the perimeter that an intrusion was occurring so we’d have time to respond,” says Coy Werner of the City of Denton. “SmarterFence works well to provide us that early warning and accurately filters out the ‘noise’ so we get very few false alarms.”
Denton Municipal Electric uses SmarterFence in conjunction with more than 100 cameras. During an intrusion, the fiber optic detection system sends an audible alarm to dispatch and shows the view from the nearest camera giving system operators the opportunity to respond quickly.
“The Denton utility is another example of the great success we’ve had in working with electrical utilities across the country to improve their substation security,” says Jeff Brown, president, Smarter Security Systems. “We are pleased to provide a product that works well with their existing equipment to help ensure power is not disrupted for Denton customers by petty criminals.”
