AUSTIN, Texas—Smarter Security Systems, a provider of entrance and outdoor perimeter protection, has installed its SmarterFence solution at Guadalupe Valley Electric Cooperative (GVEC), a utility company serving rural Texas.
GVEC provides power to about 65,000 customers in 13 counties located in south central Texas. The installation marks the second GVEC substation to install the SmarterFence, a fiber optic intrusion detection system that provides perimeter protection for the facility.
“We sought to establish a model for future compliance with NERC [North American Reliability Council] standards with new substation construction,” says Bernie Acre, information services division manager for GVEC. “The Smarter Outdoor solutions are a key part of our physical security and compliance, as they provide us early warning of intrusions.”
GVEC has received minimal nuisance alarms since installing the SmarterFence because of its ability to be configured for the substation’s specific use and location, says Acre. Additionally, the system configuration was so easy to learn that Acre says they were able to install it themselves.
“GVEC is a terrific example of how to secure a fenced property and how our Smarter Outdoor solutions complement and integrate with each other and with other technologies to provide the reliable protection needed,” says Smarter Security Systems President Jeff Brown. “We are pleased to be working with GVEC in its ongoing efforts to secure its substations and deliver uninterrupted power to its many member customers.”
