CONWAY, S.C. – The Conway City Council has approved spending nearly $44,000 to install a wireless video surveillance system to monitor parks throughout the town.
The nine-camera system, called the Wildfire camera network, will feature feature “line of sight” technology, which uses a series of relay points, such as utility poles and water towers, to connect remote cameras with the city’s E-911 Center, The Sun News reports.

The cameras will be placed in city parks, at the Riverwalk and on the site of the recreation complex.
The network can also expand to support cameras from Horry County Schools or the local housing authority, according to police.

Police maintain the cameras are not a response of high crime. Rather, the city is seeking to be more efficient with monitoring large, city-owned areas, such as parks, that a difficult to access.
The new system will allow officers to remotely monitor parks in addition to their scheduled foot patrols.
