Barcelona nightclub patrons may be able to leave their credit cards and IDs at home with the help of a tiny RFID chip embedded under their skin called VeriChip, CNN reports. The system is designed to thwart identity theft and fraudulent credit card use.
For 125 euros, Baja Beach Club patrons can have the rice grain-sized chip implanted in their body. Once complete, clubbers pass through a scanner, which activates the chip and emits a signal containing their numbers and transmits it to a secure data storage site.
Clubgoers can buy drinks using the scanner and pay the bill later.
Conrad Chase, the club’s director, told CNN that 10 regular customers, including himself, sport the chip and he expects many to follow. He says the glass chip works as an in-house debit card and contains no personal information and poses no health risks.
