Springfield Police Department to Use Real Time Crime Analysis and Intelligence Center

Center will incorporate ShotSpotter audio surveillance as well as public and private video surveillance systems across the city.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — The Springfield Police Department announced the creation of a new, $1 million security center that will provide “real time” crime analysis and situational awareness to officers, according to a MassLive report.

The Real Time Crime Analysis and Intelligence Center will incorporate numerous state and city databases, such as Springfield’s ShotSpotter audio surveillance system and city and private video surveillance systems to accumulate crime intelligence in real time. Approximately 100 city-owned cameras will be integrated into the system.

The system marks the first of its kind in a city in the Northeast, according to Motorola Solutions.

“This is smart policing,” Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno said. “It’s going to keep our residents safe and our police officers safe as well.”

“It’s next generation public safety,” said Tom Gross, director of Command Center Solutions for Motorola. “We are doing something we have been doing for the past 20 or 25 years, but we are doing it in real time.”

Springfield Police Commissioner John Barbieri said the center should be fully operational by Spring 2016.

Syncing police dispatch calls with real-time updates on the scene can help expedite police response by streamlining accurate information to responders in an efficient manner.
