Welcome to another edition of SSI Video Weekly News.
A new trend is emerging in the public’s fight against crime. Local police departments are asking homeowners and business owners to register their outdoor surveillance cameras, thus creating a blanket of surveillance of a city or town in which authorities can request access to security footage if a crime is committed within the vicinity of a specific camera.
Such programs are occurring in Cranston, R.I., and Manhattan Beach, Calif., where police say the registrations will help identify suspects and speed up investigations.
A similar program was put in place in Washington, D.C. The Private Security Incentive Program will also provide rebates for the purchase, installation and registration of surveillance cameras outside of homes or businesses.
