Stanley Wins Contract to Install Security at NASA Facilities

INDIANAPOLIS

As NASA has returned to space with its space shuttle, it is looking to Stanley Security Solutions Inc. to help it with the more down-to-earth problem of security. NASA has awarded a contract to Stanley to provide access control and security systems for its facilities and centers through the United States. The two-year, $4.8 million contract has the option for an extension.

NASA has been looking to standardize what has been up until now separate electronic security strategies for its 15 centers through its Common Badging and Access Control Systems (CBACS) initiative. Stanley had developed the system through its work with the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. Among the initial systems installations will be at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., Glenn Research Center in Cleveland and Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

Joe Costa, vice president of sales for Stanley, told SSI working with the NASA isn’t like working with one client. “It’s so spread out. You’re dealing with 15 different clients,” Costa says. “Even though the program was developed at Marshall and approved at headquarters, you still need to get all 15 centers on board.”

Stanley will develop and install an external and internal entry and smart card-based access control and security system at the various NASA facilities. Much of the system will be installed off products from Lenel Systems.

Costa says he had developed a relationship with NASA as founder of ISR Solutions, which was acquired by Stanley last December.

“The knowledge of the various sites gave us an advantage,” says Costa, who adds the contract will be a big selling point for Stanley with future clients. “It’s going to get a lot of attention. One of our challenges is we’re relatively new to the security space and need to make people aware that we’re in the systems integration business.”
