Now that Fall has arrived, thermostats will begin to be turned up and the amount of hearty meals being cooked will increase. With an increase in heat and fire comes an increase of fatalities.
In order to raise fire-safety awareness, website A Secure Life has released a report that reveals the states with the most fatal house fires, as well as those with the least.
To find the number of residential fire fatalities in every state, A Secure Life used data from the US Fire Administration to calculate the number of fatal residential fires from January 1st, 2018 until the end of August 2018.
It then calculated the number of fatalities caused by smoking, cooking and heating (the most common causes of home fires).

Other findings from the report include:
- Texas has the most house fires so far in 2018, with 99 house fires. It has also had nine fire fatalities caused by cooking—more than any other state.
- North Carolina has the most fire fatalities caused by smoking in 2018, with five.
- Oklahoma has had the most fire fatalities caused by heating in 2018, with four.
