Study Finds Majority of Residential Alarm Owners Aren’t Using Their System

A new study by an insurance group brings new meaning to the assertion that an alarm system is only as good as those who use it – or in this case, use it at all. A survey of homeowners by Farmers Insurance Group found that 53 percent of home alarm owners never use their system.

The survey, run as part of a promotion promoting securing homes for the holidays, also found that 28 percent of homeowners rarely or never keep the outside of their home well-lit at night, let alone use outdoor sensors to activate lighting.

“The holidays can be an open invitation for burglars,” said Farmers Senior Vice President Jeff Beyer in a statement. “Homeowners can help stop these crimes by installing and using a home security system.”
