FRAMINGHAM, Mass. — A new study predicts that network camera market share will surpass analog camera market share in the United States by 2009. The study by market analysis firm IDC says that network camera shipments are expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 82 percent between 2004 and 2009, while analog camera shipments will drop by 4 percent.
Chris Chute, senior analyst for IDC and author of the report, says if anything surprises him, it’s that the fall of analog isn’t happening any sooner.
“If one has a particular kind of network infrastructure, it makes sense to add that surveillance feature to a network,” says Chute, who sees both electronic security manufacturers and IT companies sharing the market. “There’s going to be overlap between traditional security folks who learn [networking] and new entities coming into the market who aren’t in electronic security.”
