NEW YORK CITY – SmartAsset, a real estate and personal finance services company based here, crunched various metrics to identify the safest cities in the United States. Violent crime was a primary factor in the company’s analysis, but it also looked at other measures of safety, such as motor vehicle accidents, drug use and excessive drinking.

The largest 200 cities in the U.S. were considered for the study. Six metrics in total, reflective of leading causes of death and injury in the U.S. per 100,000 residents, were factored: violent crime rate; vehicular mortality rate; drug poisoning mortality rate; population engaging in excessive drinking (percentage of the population that consumed more than 4 [women] or 5 [men] drinks of alcohol over a 30-day period);
Air Quality Index; and commuters driving to work alone.
