ST. CLAIR TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Sunoco Logistics announced that it will pay a $2,800 bill for a resident here who called the fire department several times to report what she thought was a hazardous odor.

Firefighters responded to Venessa Davis’ home several times in 2014 when she complained about an odor coming from the nearby Sunoco Logistics crude oil tank farm. The Times Herald of Port Huron reports.

After authorities determined that there were no air quality hazards, St. Clair Township billed Davis $400 each for seven “false alarm” responses.

Davis says she was unaware of the false alarm fee until she received the bill in February. She believes township should have fined Sunoco Logistics under its nuisance ordinance, which includes odors that affect a person’s ability to use or enjoy their property.

Sunoco Logistics agreed to pay Davis’ bill after learning of the situation.

A company spokesman said the firm is confident any “odor issues” have also been resolved.
