Survey: Barriers Persist in Implementing Physical-IT Convergence

LOUISVILLE, Ky.

A new study released by Honeywell reveals how some organizations are integrating physical security measures with traditional IT systems, while still contending with significant barriers that prevent them from converging their systems.

Titled “Enterprise Threat Management and Security Convergence: A Benchmarking Study,” survey results show many organizations remain conflicted on how to best attain optimal results from converged security solutions.

More than 50 chief information officers and chief security officers from U.S.-based global companies with revenues from $1 billion to more than $100 billion participated in the survey. Respondents were queried on such topics as convergence investment, the level of interaction between their security and IT functions, and security risks.

Among the results:

  • 73 percent of the respondents believe vulnerabilities in either physical or IT security can lead to a breach in the other system
  •

  • 63 percent said their security and IT organizations had a formal coordination mechanism
  •

  • When asked whether having physical security systems on IT backbones is a security risk, the answers were split: 59 percent, no; 42 percent, yes
