Survey Finds Low Awareness of House Fire Risk

WASHINGTON

Home and apartment fires are the most common disaster in the United States, but most Americans don’t know it. According to a new survey by the American Red Cross, 80 percent of those polled did not know that residential fires are the leading cause of disasters in the U.S. – even though more people died in house and apartment fires last year than floods, hurricanes, tornadoes and mudslides combined despite Hurricane Katrina.

The survey also found that more than half of families with children are using high-risk methods to heat their homes.
