A market research company serving the IT industry sees a
huge spike in growth ahead for RFID (radio frequency
identification) technology and gives much of the credit to
security and access control. Evans Data Corp., in its
Wireless Development Survey to be released next
week, says it expects RFID applications to rise by 450
percent in the next year and a further 96 percent in
2006.
In the survey of 450 wireless developers, 36 percent
expected to deploy RFID technology within the next two
years. Of those using RFID, three out of every 10 planned
to use RFID for security and access control – more than any
other application.
“We’re living in a more security conscious world and people
are looking for anything that can make it more efficient.
RFID is a good thing toward that,” Evans Data wireless
analyst Jason Kaczor told Security Sales &
Integration.
Kaczor says the continuing reduction in cost of RFID
technology is causing a rise in its popularity. “As more
manufacturers make more products RFID compliant, costs will
go down and it will be easier for companies to jump into
the RFID market,” he says. “The only roadblock to
acceptance of RFID technology is the costs of the tags
themselves. Once tags go below a penny or less, it will
skyrocket in terms of adoption. It’s not that far off … a
year or two years away at most.”
