TCS Fire & Security Aims to Differentiate With Installation Excellence

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – TCS Fire & Security is an installing contractor, based here, that services a wide range of clients, from the residential and commercial markets to the U.S. Army’s Fort Bragg. Operated by brothers Nathan and Brian Taylor, the company was founded on an entrepreneurial spirit that defines so many other independent security dealer and fire/life-safety organizations in the industry.

Nathan Taylor, who serves as general manager, was recently interviewed for an installment of the Fayetteville Observer‘s Business Spotlight series. He says the mission of the company – as its namesake Taylored Control Systems suggests – is to provide the finest installations in the market. Read more about the company and its business practices in the newspaper’s Q&A:

How did your business come about?
I originally started working with a friend to get a similar business underway and started working as a technician in 2007. I then began working on installations and then moved on to an operations manager position. Fortunately, I became familiar with different parts and gained skill and expertise in several areas of the business.

What made you want to get into this area?
Growing up my brother and I remember hearing our father speak of the positive outcomes of owning your own business. We always had the understanding of how important it was to work very hard, and that’s exactly what we wanted to do. I started out as a technician with ADT and then was able to move from a technician to installations. I then moved on to operations manager, and in my head I knew this was something I could do with the help of my family.

Who are the people making it happen?
This company would not be running as well as it is without every single employee we have here at Taylored Control Systems. My brother, Brian Taylor, is my partner and heads up a lot of the large installations we have with our company. I believe him to be one of the best commercial technicians in this region. Sales Manager Greg Voiles is also another person whom I am proud to call one of my team members. He has sold over 15,000 security systems in his career and one I believe illustrates key leadership throughout this company. In terms of sales representatives, he is the best of the best and one I can always count on to be hardworking.

Our team would also not be complete without Office Manager Casey Richter. Her organization, hard work and dedication to this company puts her at the top. Field Supervisor Matthew Gibbs has been here since the beginning. These people portray great skill, and they devote their time every day to make sure Taylored Control Systems excels as a business and in our service. The family business would not be complete without a man whom I will always have great respect for. That is another partner of mine and also my father-in-law, retired lieutenant colonel Special Forces, Mr. Van Ritch.”

How has the economy affected your business?
It did, but I believe we were able to get through the toughest part. The recession was difficult for many businesses, but our team has always worked hard, and we strive to deliver great customer service. We have a great reputation and we work really hard to get where we are now. I am proud to say that we have now made a name for ourselves with some government work. We currently have a contract with Hoke County Schools, and we recently had a rather large installation of new cameras for the Airborne & Special Operations Museum in downtown Fayetteville.

What is your busiest time of year?
Our busier times are usually June through August. During this time there are a lot of new home sales and completions. So, we usually have a lot of foot traffic for items for new homes and construction.

What is your most popular service?
I’d have to say touch screen, home automation and recently our camera sales have really increased. We were also fortunate to be interviewed and chosen by Homes by Dickerson to install lighting control, audio video and home automation for the brand new HGTV Smart Home in Raleigh, North Carolina. The show we participated in will air this spring.

What is the best part of owning your business?
I absolutely love the excitement of this business. I can have good days and bad days. There are so many things that happen all at the same time during the day but I love the challenge. I have imperative responsibilities and I love the satisfaction I get out of this every single day. We want to make people happy and for them to know how serious we are about this kind of work.
