Top 10 Security Stories From August 2020: ADT, ADT & More ADT

August kicked off with one of the most newsworthy weeks the security industry has seen in recent memory. And considering none of it was centered around the COVID-19 pandemic, it was quite refreshing.

On Aug. 3, ADT announced it had entered a partnership with Google. That same day, Motorola acquired Pelco for $110M in cash. The following day, Johnson Controls acquired its remaining stake in Qolsys.

Now as you can probably tell from the headline, content around the ADT-Google partnership generated a lot of interest among SSI online visitors. As it should. This partnership could have a major ripple effect on the industry.

In addition to ADT revealing it will eventually fully replace its portfolio of hardware with an all-Google offering, we learned that the search engine giant also acquired a 6.6% stake in the nation’s largest provider of security and monitoring services.

Many industry experts see this as a move by Google to better compete with Amazon and its Ring brand. While the home security field traditionally consists largely of legacy brands such as ADT and Brinks (and even those are beginning to be pushed out by DIY and smart home competitors), could we soon see this area come down to a battle of Google vs. Amazon?

While ADT-Google coverage makes up for a good portion of this month’s top stories, it was actually ADT’s latest lawsuit against Vivint that took the top spot.

Other top stories include the aforementioned acquisitions by Motorola and Johnson Controls, as well as important EIDL Loan information and more.
