Top 10 Security Stories From February 2022: 3G Sunset, Secure Equipment Act Impact

February 2022 brought the U.S. the first of three 3G sunset deadlines. AT&T shut down its network last week, leaving millions of alarm customers with non-functional alarm radios.

Unsurprisingly, this was a hot topic on SSI. Integrators already faced a daunting task having to replace millions of radios, and the COVID-19 pandemic and supply chain shortages only made an already challenging mission more difficult.

At the last minute, AT&T did strike a roaming agreement with T-Mobile, however, it is only available to a certain subset of devices that are in
areas where T-Mobile has coverage and have AT&T SIM cards that are both on the Cisco Jasper platform and configured for roaming.

Another area with an industry-wide affect is The Secure Equipment Act, which restricts the deployment of telecommunications and video surveillance equipment manufactured by China-based companies that are considered a national security risk.

Honeywell announced it would be discontinuing its Performance Series and EquIP Series product lines to proactively address a potential supply chain issue due to the legislation.

February also included the usual handful of mergers and acquisitions, including Resideo’s purchase of First Alert (not to be confused with the old First Alert Professional Security Systems brand of panels), as well as Pye-Barker’s deal for Matson Alarm.

Additional popular stories in February touch the smart home, robotics and more. You can view all these stories in the slideshow.
