HEMET, Calif. — People going from rags to riches is usually reserved for movies and fairytales. But for one pizza delivery worker, the story is all true.
Joseph Carrillo, 31, was on his last dollar when he bought a scratch ticket at a local liquor store. He was ready to leave his apartment and move back home because he could no longer afford the rent.
Little did he know that lottery ticket would be his guardian angel. Video surveillance at the liquor store captured the gleeful moment when the cashier confirmed Carrillo’s hopes: He had won the $1.2 million prize.
One swipe and it says, ‘Life.’ I look over at my nephew, did that just happen?” Carrillo said to KABC.
The video footage of Carrillo’s celebration leads off this week’s edition of the Surveillance Videos of the Week.
“His expression on his face was like, ‘whoa,’” said store manager Efrain Murrillo, who checked Carrillo’s ticket. “He went from being excited to crying because he realized he’d won $1.2 million.”
Carrillo opted to take the lump sum of $696,000 before taxes and plans to continue to attend college and invest.
