FOLEY, Ala. — Business owner Aubrey Morris heard a boom outside his office. He thought it was a tornado.
He was wrong.
Instead it was a Cessna 421 twin engine that fell from the sky, crashing through trees before bursting into flames. Morris immediately assumed the worst for the pilot inside. “I thought the poor dude was gone,” he said.
Then Morris and other witnesses saw the door open from the plane. The pilot, Russell Smith, was alive and emerged from the flames.
Smith thought he was going to die in the crash. Instead, he only had a cut on his hand.
He even said he wouldn’t go to the hospital.
“I’m going home, take a shower, put some burn ointment on my hand and lay down,” Smith said. “I thank God I walked away from that mess.”
