CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Startup Halo Smart Labs, based here, has introduced smart smoke alarm devices that combine multilayered sensor technology to detect flash fires, smoldering fires and carbon monoxide (CO).
Manufactured in the United States, the Halo and Halo WX devices connect to the Internet, all major home automation systems and mobile devices. They can also warn users of safety threats through both iOS and Android applications. Halo WX comes preprogrammed to receive localized alerts about tornado warnings and watches, and can also be adjusted to alert users of more than a dozen dangerous weather patterns as well as nuclear hazards, civil emergencies and more, according to the company.

The devices also come equipped with a lithium-ion rechargeable battery that eliminates the chirping often associated with regular detectors. The battery-operated version of Halo alerts users on their cell phones when the alarm’s batteries are running low and need to be replaced.
After Halo Smart Labs reached its funding goal and successfully closed a $900,000 seed round, the company developed and released an all-new battery-powered Halo Smoke Alarm. The standard Halo and Halo WX versions are hardwired into a home with a rechargeable backup battery that offers 10 years of battery life.
Company founders Ben Stagg and Chad White talked with the Charlotte Business Journal earlier this year about their vision for the technology, an idea born from Stagg’s family’s close call with the devastating tornadoes that ripped through Joplin, Mo., in 2011.
